Mamy's Story
Mamy and her husband are farmers in a rural part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. For years, Mamy noticed a gradual swelling and ulcers on her left leg. In 2018 she finally came to our Christian partner hospital, IME Kimpese, for treatment. She learned that the problems with her leg were caused by lymphatic filariasis: a disease that leads to fluid retention and irreversible lower limb swelling.
Kimpese’s staff treated her ulcers, but Mamy’s life changed drastically. She could no longer work in the field or do any difficult labor without hurting her leg. Even worse than the pain and disability was the despair: as years passed with no change in her condition, Mamy felt like she was useless to her family and her life had no meaning.
But in 2021, Mamy met a pastor from our Faith Leaders project with IME Kimpese Hospital. Because of his training with the project, the pastor could offer Mamy spiritual encouragement and teach her important self-care steps that keep her leg infection-free. Instead of paying for expensive supplies, Mamy now has access to kits from IME Kimpese with everything she needs for daily care.
Because of your support for our Faith Leaders project, Mamy has a path forward for today and hope for the future! Doctors at IME Kimpese believe that a surgery and prosthetic limb will help her regain mobility and confidence.
“My hope is to become well, to be healed,” she told us recently. “This is my only dream.” This is our dream for millions more people like Mamy around the world!
Thank you for joining us on this journey to partner with the Church and set people free from the pain and stigma of neglected tropical diseases, as we live and proclaim the gospel.
